The DOG WHISPERER® all-natural Tick and Flea system is made with a unique blend of 100 percent natural active ingredients such as cedarwood, peppermint, rosemary, lemongrass, geranium and thyme. These carefully selected essential oils effectively repel and kill ticks and fleas, while being completely safe for our furry friends. Beyond essential oils, YAYA Organics uses a limited selection of other ingredients such as organic soybean oil and castor oil, coconut-based castile soap, xanthan gum, water and glycerin. They use absolutely no harsh chemicals, synthetic pesticide materials, mineral oil, GMO’s or fillers.

Dog Whisperer: Are the ingredients in the tick and flea system completely safe to use on dogs?

YAYA Organics: Absolutely. The ingredients in the DOG WHISPERER® Tick + Flea system are thoughtfully researched for their efficacy and safety. Our #1 priority is to provide safe, all-natural products that really work. Of course, not all “natural” ingredients are safe for dogs. Wintergreen, Clove and Tea Tree oils, for example, are considered unsafe for dogs. Our formulas are careful to avoid oils that are not recommended by veterinarians and leading aromatherapists. Our special blend of essential oils is safe for dogs when used as directed. Our tick and flea products are intended to be used topically, and not to be ingested. (If the dog licks their fur it’s okay; we’re talking about ingesting a large quantity.) When using essential oils for dogs, it is very important to use the proper application and dilution. We have taken these important things into consideration when formulating our products.

DW: How did you pick out these ingredients?

Y: That’s a great question! There are several key factors that frame YAYA’s approach to choosing ingredients for our products. YAYA Organics is committed to using plant-based ingredients that are healthy for people, pets and the environment. We believe that natural ingredients support optimal health and well-being, as well as the sustainability of our planet.

When researching individual essential oils, we recognize that there is A LOT of conflicting information and recommendations on the internet, especially for pets. The reality is that there is no one, single authoritative governing body for essential oils. We studied scientific data found in university epidemiology studies, as well as consulted essential oil experts. One of the most striking discoveries we made was that clove and eugenol are not recommended for dogs by aromatherapists because it can cause burning and irritation on the dog’s skin. We were surprised by how many natural tick and flea products actually use clove oil and/or eugenol (which is a chemical constituent of clove oil) in their formulas. We knew right away that we would NOT include clove or eugenol in our formulas. Our decisions are guided by our values, ethics and mission which tell us to be as safe, natural and healthy as possible — for people, pets and our planet.

DW: What amount of essential oils is safe for use on a dog?

Y: There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to essential oils, but there are certain principles and practices that help us (and our dogs) stay within safe boundaries. When it comes to essential oils and dog safety, it is very important to remember that each dog is different, just like humans. You want to keep in mind that bigger dogs can handle oils in a stronger dilution than small dogs. Dogs, as we all know, have an exceptional sense of smell — much greater than humans — which means that when we use essential oils around dogs, we need to be mindful of their behavioral responses. Some dogs are very sensitive to certain oils, while others are not, so introducing essential oils slowly and in small doses is important, while watching for signs of any discomfort. In the case of applying essential oils on the dog, we must use common sense and use only enough essential oil to achieve the desired effect, without overwhelming the dog, or causing irritation or burning, etc. We never want to apply essential oils neat (undiluted) unless it’s given the green light by a professional aromatherapist or veterinarian. That being said, the Dog Whisperer Tick and Flea products use essential oils that are diluted at safe levels for their specific application.

DW: What kinds of essential oils and other chemicals/scents are harmful to dogs?

Y: The essential oils that we understand are harmful/toxic to dogs include: Pennyroyal, Pine, Birch, Tea Tree, Clove and Wintergreen. We also understand that citrus essential oils are to be avoided for our furry friends. One thing to be aware of is the fact that many essential oils or plants are toxic when ingested in large quantities but may be perfectly safe when used in a diluted form and applied topically.

DW: Is using essential oils safer overall than using chemicals, for tick and flea prevention/treatment?

Y: Yes, we absolutely believe that using essential oils is safer and healthier than using chemical treatments. Essential oils are potent natural plant oils that have many therapeutic and practical benefits for dogs and people. We love that essential oils can be used to prevent and treat ticks and fleas effectively, that they naturally have fresh and uplifting scents (that don’t cause headaches like synthetic oils and fragrances do!) and that they are also eco-friendly. Win-win!

The chemical tick and flea products are effective; however we have heard countless stories from dog owners that tried the chemical tick and flea products and consequently witnessed their dogs have devastating reactions including seizures and even death. YAYA Organics is proud to offer a healthy and eco-friendly alternative for tick and flea control, while keeping our dogs healthy and safe.

Thank you for your great questions. Essential oils are so wonderful and yet it is so important that people know how to use them properly with their dogs. This has been a great opportunity to shine light on the topic of essential oils and dog safety. We hope it was helpful and informative. Please stay safe and enjoy a fabulous (tick and flea-free) spring and summer!
